Good afternoon! Just a quick update. Austin had 2 appointments this week. The first was on Wednesday for his 6 month eye doctor appointment. You may be thinking it's a little soon to be going to the eye doctor. Well, Rebecca Olson is our genetics nurse practitioner who specializes in children with Down Syndrome. She has a special schedule of additional "check ins" that typical children would not need. More frequent vision screenings is one of them. Dr. Engel shared that Austin has near sightedness and astigmatism. So crazy how they can tell these things in a 6 month old. He also has some tiny tear ducts which lead to goopy (like that medical term) eyes from time to time, especially if he has been crying or is congested and some nystagmus which is rapid movement of the eyes typically from left and right. Both of these things are very typical and there's a chance some of this will resolve on it's own. Austin will see Dr. Engel again in 6 months to check on progress.
The second appointment was Thursday and it was a combination of his 6 month well check and his pre op physical. Other than some serious tears after his immunizations, Austin did amazing! He's growing, he's happy, his heart murmur (ASD) was nearly undetectable and he was approved for surgery on Thursday!
So, we enter this week with a whirlwind of emotions. We are excited to get this step behind us and excited for Austin as this will allow him to continue to get better and better, however, it's never easy to send your child to the operating room. We have all the confidence in the world in Dr. Kreykes and the surgical team at Children's. Goal this week is to stay strong!
Thanks in advance for all your thoughts, prayers and messages of support! You are very appreciated!
Sincerely,
Tara and Brian
Max and Austin
